José Pedro Balmaceda Pascal was born in Santiago, Chile, to child psychologist Verónica Pascal Ureta and fertility doctor José Balmaceda Riera. His family's opposition to the dictatorial regime of Augusto Pinochet would soon shape his early life.

Due to his family's political stance against Augusto Pinochet, they sought refuge in the Venezuelan embassy in Santiago and later received political asylum in Denmark. Eventually, the family settled in the United States, first in San Antonio, Texas, and later in Orange County, California.

Pascal graduated from the Orange County School of the Arts in Santa Ana, California, where he developed a strong passion for drama and classic movies.

He earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, marking the beginning of his formal education in acting.

Pascal made his professional acting debut on television with a role in the series "Good vs Evil". This marked the start of his career, which would initially involve numerous guest roles in various TV shows.

Pascal gained widespread recognition for his portrayal of Oberyn Martell in the fourth season of HBO's "Game of Thrones". This role was a significant breakthrough in his career, making him a fan favorite.

He played the role of Javier Peña, a DEA agent, in the Netflix series "Narcos". This performance further solidified his reputation as a talented actor and earned him critical acclaim.

Pascal took on the leading role of Din Djarin in the Disney+ series "The Mandalorian", part of the Star Wars universe. He also portrayed Joel Miller in the HBO series "The Last of Us", a dystopian drama based on a video game, which earned him multiple award nominations, including a Primetime Emmy Award nomination.

Pascal received a 2023 Primetime Emmy Award nomination for his performance in "The Last of Us", making history as only the second Latino actor to compete for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series. He also set a record for the most Emmy nods by a Latino actor in a single year.

Pascal won a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series for "The Last of Us" and was named Male TV Star of The Year at The People’s Choice Awards, further cementing his status as a leading actor in contemporary television.
