Edgar Allan Poe. Education and Military Service

Poe attends the University of Virginia, studying ancient and modern languages, but is expelled for not paying his gambling debts.

Poe enlists in the U.S. Army under the name 'Edgar A. Perry,' claiming to be 22 years old when he was actually 18. His first book of poetry, Tamerlane and Other Poems, is published shortly after.

Poe is appointed to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. He publishes his second book of poetry, Al Aaraaf, Tamerlane and Minor Poems.

Poe successfully gets himself kicked out of West Point by stopping attendance at classes and chapel, leading to his court-martial and dismissal.
